LOU DONALDSON: QUARTET, QUINTET, SEXTET

If a lion roars in the jungle and there’s no one there to hear… Every sound that is made is not necessarily for human consumption. But this young lion, hailing from Brooklyn, New York is making sounds worthy of every ear that can catch the rhythms emanating from his drums. It is no surprise that this soon to be doctor of ethnomusicology is without question an important contributor to the genre, evident of his extensive catalog of recordings and performances. His diverse and varied approach to the music is directly reflective of his international import, documented since 1992.

This long awaited debut on Origin as a leader is no less outstanding. Enlisting the talents of pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Rodney Whitaker, trumpeter Terell Stafford and alto saxophonist Tim Warfield, Jr., the now Chicago-based drummer brings fire to the fore as he propels mostly original content to new understandings in jazz.

As we anticipate his second sojourn to the studio, we must resign ourselves to enthusiastically enjoy this gift and relax into the light.

I love Eliane. I wore out her record album with Randy Brecker. Now I have it on CD. Brazilian Classics is good, too. I haven't heard this one yet. Thanks for the recommendation.

Talk about "chillin".....I thoroughly enjoyed the smooth and mesmerizing sounds on this installment. What a way to end a day of haste and constant workplace challenges. I'm enjoying the versatility of digital NBAF. So thankful to be a part of what I'm certain will continue to grow.

Russell Gunn returns with a new album, Love Stories, which hit stores on September 9. Love Stories is Gunn's "uncoventional" interpretation of the "love" themed album. In talking to him over the weekend he said that he wanted to explore the dysfunctional sides of love. Tunes like I'm In Love With A Stripper, Love For Sale and Love Requiem all fall in line with this theme. Ghandi's Love, with the voice of Ghandi integrated into the song, breaks the listener out of dysfunction momentarily only to be thrust back in with The Stripper Song. Russell believes this to be his best producing, arranging, and playing yet. The album features a quintet of alto, keys, bass, drums, and trumpet, augmented by percussion, guitar, voice, and the great Kirk Whalum on tenor saxophone.
